Our “I Do” Story; Happy Anniversary to Us – Temecula Wedding Planner

Todays’ blog has special meaning for me, you see, today is our 38th wedding anniversary. It’s hard to believe that 38 years have gone by because it really does seem like just yesterday, these two young crazy kids said “I Do”.

So, relax and let me share a little bit of how our story began…

**********

You never know when you will meet the person you are meant to spend your life with, for me, I was in high school. We met in the school auditorium at San Pedro High School. I was practicing for a Christmas show and Jimmy (my husband) was there as part of the stage crew.

It was kind of funny because I did not even notice him, but he says he noticed me right away.  It was getting close to lunch and the school had two different lunch times. He had first lunch and went and got a sandwich and came back to eat it in the auditorium (on purpose I found out later).

My friend Jackie and I were sitting in the seats waiting to be called for our part in the show. He sat right behind us to eat his lunch. My friend and I were hungry, so I turned around and politely asked if he would go get us some food. Well, he gave us his sandwich instead and the rest is history.

We both grew up in San Pedro and we would spend a lot of time at the beach, Royal Palms and Point Fermin Park, which is on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We knew early on that we wanted to get married, but neither one of our families were too happy about it, because we were so young.

One Friday afternoon as we were driving along the coast, he stopped at one of the lookout areas (we loved to hang out there and watch the water and harbor).  We were sitting on one of the benches and I was looking at the view and did not pay much attention that he was not next to me. When I noticed him not there, I got up, turned around and saw him on one knee with a ring.

I was completely taken by surprise. Yes, we talked about getting married one day, but I had no idea he was going to propose. I said “yes” of course.  It’s funny because there was a group of Japanese tourist there taking pictures, but we did not pay any attention to them, it was like we were the only ones there. (awww)

We married pretty young, against the advice of several people, but when you are young and in love, you just go for it. We got married on July 26, 1980 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro. It was a beautiful ceremony followed by a casual reception in my in-laws’ backyard.

**********

It was a great day and we look back at that time and ask ourselves; “who were those crazy kids?”.  We are definitely not the same people we were back then and thankfully, we have grown together and not apart.

Our honeymoon story is hilarious and one I will share one day on another post. Let’s just say, that those few days were the beginning of the many adventures that were to come.

It has not always been easy, but no one said marriage is easy. It’s a choice we make every day to live out the vows we took 38 years ago. We like to tell people that we raised each other and in a way, it is true.

We have had our share of ups and downs, highs and lows, but that is what happens in relationships. But we never let the tough times beat us. Those are the times when you lean on each other the most.

It has been a great adventure so far and we have been extremely blessed with a wonderful family and I am ready to continue this adventure with him for the next 30 years.

So, how will we celebrate this year…we both love the beach, so we are heading down to Oceanside and will probably end up at Rockin Baja for a casual seafood dinner, enjoy the cool beach weather and hopefully catch a great sunset.

After all, it is a work day tomorrow…Happy Anniversary to us!

Unique Guest Book Ideas-Temecula-wedding-planner

Hello and welcome back! Well, we have officially entered Wedding Season!  As a planner, I talk to many brides about the “theme” or “look” of the wedding.

Every bride has a vision of what they want their wedding day to look like and of course, it is my job to ensure that it happens.  I love working with creative brides who do not want the “cookie cutter” wedding look, and thankfully, with Pinterest and Etsy, brides have so many places to get inspiration from. Follow me on Pinterest at: www.pinterest.com/eventsbymaria3265

One of the things I have noticed over the last couple of years is how personal couples want to make their day; which I love by the way.

One of the ways couples have incorporated their style is with the Guest Book. I don’t remember the last time I saw an actual “wedding guest book” at a wedding.  When I got married, back in the day, every wedding seemed the same, and yes, we had the traditional guest book.

I thought I would share what couples I have worked with have done. I hope this helps with some ideas and inspirations…Enjoy!

One of my most recent weddings was held at a winery in Temecula, so the couple had guests sign this wine barrel. What a great way to incorporate the venue into your wedding. Loved this idea…

DSC_0649

This couple wants to travel, so they had their guest sign this globe to see where in world they should go. Super cute idea…

This couple love the arts and incorporated some of it into their wedding. One way they did this was they had guest leave their “thumb” prints on a tree to create the leaves. They then framed it and hung it in their house. Great way to add art to your walls and remember your wedding day!

13938289_1257225544288323_6181879494577416686_o

This couple had a similar idea, except it was a rustic theme so they had each guest sign a heart and drop it into the frame so they too could hang it in their home and remember the day forever.

My nephew and his wife had guest highlight their favorite Bible verse in a Bible at their wedding. They keep this Bible on their coffee table. What a great way to see what everyone’s favorite passages are.

Here are a few other ideas I came across…

I hope this gives you some inspiration and ideas as you plan for your wedding. Remember, this your day, let it reflect who you are as a couple so don’t feel pressured to be so different that it no longer reflects you or your theme.

Oh, and if you want to go with the traditional Guest Book, go for it!

So tell me, what are some things you have seen at a wedding that you just loved? Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear them.

Whose Wedding Is It Anyway – part 2, Wedding Dress Shopping//Temecula Wedding Planner

Hello and welcome back! In honor of the month we celebrate mom’s and the Royal Wedding, I thought it would be a good time to update you on how the wedding planning is coming along for my daughter’s wedding. We are officially five months away! Yikes…

People from all over the U.S. are excited to watch the Royal Wedding coming up. Part of the excitement includes seeing the Wedding Dress that Meghan Markle will wear. It has been a well kept secret and I can’t wait to see it.

Finding the perfect dress is something all brides look forward to when wedding dress shopping and I am sure Meghan was no exception.

I want to share my dress shopping experience with my daughter.  Now, let me tell you, wedding dress shopping is fun, exciting and emotional, especially for us mom’s.

As I mentioned in my previous blog (Whose wedding is it anyway – March), moms have a vision for their daughter’s wedding and that includes the wedding dress.  For me, the dress is not complete until the vail is put on.

My daughter made appointments at three bridal boutiques in the San Diego area. I was very excited to see her try on dresses, but what I looked forward to the most was seeing her in the vail! I love long cathedral vails, so I was secretly hoping my daughter would love a long vail too.

The bridal crew included; her maid of honor, my niece, my mom, my son and daughter in law and myself.

IMG_5772.JPG

**********

Her first appointment was at The Bustle Bridal Boutique located in Del Mar. My daughter was greeted with a wonderful sign welcoming her. They had Champaign waiting for us, which was a nice surprise. What I loved about this boutique is they only book one appointment at a time, so it was just us.

It was a surreal moment for me. I imagined this moment since she was a little girl and now it was actually happening.  I have to say, when I saw her come out in the first dress, she took my breath away.

**********

Our next stop was to The Dress Theory in San Diego. The shop is a beautifully restored cottage that I just fell in love with. Parking is a bit of a challenge, but if you find street parking close by, you’re good.

When we arrived we were greeted by her consultant who showed us to our own private area. I really like when bridal boutiques offer a private area for the bride and family to be in. It makes the experience so much better and more personal.

Again, all the dresses she tried on looked stunning on her. I knew this was going to be a hard decision for her. She loved so many of the dresses, but she still was not sold on one that made her feel like “this is the one”.

fullsizeoutput_6e8e

**********

After stopping for lunch at a great little Mexican restaurant in downtown San Diego, we were off to the last appointment of the day.

We arrived at Something Bleu Boutique in Oceanside. We were greeted right away and shown to the bridal area.  They had strawberry’s and Champaign waiting for us, which everyone enjoyed.

We had a nice surprise when we arrived. One of the designers was there and he personally started dressing my daughter in a variety of his latest designs. I have to say, I loved all the dresses he put her in. After a very long day, she did not say yes to any of the dresses.

She was a little disappointed, because she was hoping to find a dress. She was feeling confused about the style she wanted and was little frustrated.

fullsizeoutput_6e53

**********

About a month after we went wedding dress shopping, my daughter called to tell me she booked us a flight to New York and made an appointment at Kleinfeld’s. She loves watching the show “Say Yes to the Dress” and has always dreamed of shopping for her wedding dress Kleinfeld’s.

So, this last February we traveled to NY along with her Matron of Honor, my two nieces and my daughter in law.

We were very excited when we arrived, we could not believe we were actually there. Her consultant was Debbie and Cheyne, both are on the show regularly. This made her even more excited to be there and get the Kleinfeld experience.

We were taken back to the dressing room area and they started bringing in dresses. She tried on about 5 dresses but was still unsure on the style of dress she liked and she was starting to feel like she would not find a dress.

Debbie brought in a dress that was different from what she had been trying on. As soon as she put on the dress, the expression on her face was like none we saw before with any of the other dresses.  Debbie added the vail and the water works started flowing on all of us…She found her dress.

When asked; “Serena, are you saying yes to the dress?”, she tearfully answered “Yes”. We all were crying and hugged her, it was a great moment.

Wedding dress shopping with my daughter is an experience I will treasure forever. It was a special time I will remember and look back on with fond memories and I can’t wait to see her in her dress walking down the aisle on her wedding day .

And by the way, you have to wait to see the dress until after her wedding. You didn’t  think I would actually show the dress did you? I value my life too much to do that…

My advice to brides when it comes to wedding dress shopping is this:

  • Invite people you are close with and know your style
  • Try on different types of dresses, you may be surprised at what you like
  • Have an open mind when you go
  • You will find the perfect dress for You
  • Have fun and enjoy the experience

So, what is your dress shopping experience? Tell me about it in the comments below, I would love to hear about it.

Why You Should Hire A Wedding Planner-Temecula Wedding Planner

Hello and welcome back! With wedding season starting, many couples are planning for their Big Day and with that comes the stress of planning a wedding.

This is a busy time and there is so much to do. Finding the right vendors to hire, signing contracts and looking for the perfect venue, it can become very overwhelming.  Hiring a Planner to work with is one of the best “investments” you will make for your wedding.

wedding-planner**********

Many brides believe that if they hire a Planner that they will not have control of their vision or wedding. This is so far from the truth, in fact, a good Planner is going to work alongside with you so that the day is reflective of you as a couple and your vision.

Anyone who has ever planned a wedding on their own will tell you how stressful it is and often, they have no time to look for vendors, tour venues and look over contracts.  Couples do not always read or understand the contract they are signing, which can lead to services they think are included, but are not.

I have never heard a bride say they wish they never hired a Planner or at the minimum, a Day of Coordinator (which by the way, there is no such thing as just a “Day Of”).  I have  had talked to many brides who say “I wish I had hired a Planner”.

bridal-636018_1280

**********

I have listed of a few reasons why you should hire a Planner:

  • A Planner works with vendors that are professional, licensed and insured. They can recommend vendors they personally know and have worked with that will fit the needs of the couple.
  • A Planner can help you find the perfect venue, which helps reduce your level of stress
  • A Planner will review your vendor contracts to make sure the services you paid for, you are actually getting and that you understand what is included and what is not. This helps with misunderstanding that happens more often than not.
  • They make sure your vision is carried out
  • They manage the vendors and all the details of the day.
  • They will work with you to create your customized timeline so that all the important events and announcements happen.
  • They will be there to run the rehearsal and make sure your bridal party knows where to be the day of the wedding.
  • A Planner will help manage your guest and take care of any problems that may arise so you don’t have to.

These are just a few reasons as to why you should hire a Planner….So, what are you waiting for?

Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? When you’re a Planner and a Mom//Temecula Wedding Planner

Hello and welcome back!

I have worked with several brides and their moms over the last 8 years, and there is always some difference of opinion with what the bride wants and what mom wants. As a Planner, it is my job to hear both of their visions, but ultimately, it is the bride’s day so it is important that her wish’s and vision happen.

This is a hard position to be in sometimes, especially if the bride or groom’s parents are paying for most of the wedding. They want to have a say in some of the decisions, and they may not all agree on what the other wants.

My advice to couples is to kindly talk with the parents and remind them that this is their wedding and they want it to reflect them. I do advise the couple to consider something they don’t mind including that is important to mom or dad to make them happy.

I have often wondered if I would be the same way once my daughter was engaged. I would like to think that I would not try to plan the wedding of “my” dreams for her and that I will just enjoy the ride.

**********

I want to share a bit of what has been going on in my life these last few months. My daughter became engaged last year and will be getting married this October (yay!) So, it is MY turn to be the Mother of the Bride!

She is my only daughter and while I have worked with several brides over the last 8 years, this is different.  About a day after she got engaged my “mom” vibe kicked in and I starting thinking of all the things I envisioned for her wedding day. I found myself struggling to follow my own advice.

fullsizeoutput_51d3

It is easy for me to give advice to couples and their parents because my focus is to make sure the couple’s vision is carried out; not the parents. Well, now I am the Mother of the Bride and I get it!  Like most mom’s, I have ideas and visions of what my kids’ wedding day would be like.  I have dreamt of her wedding day since she was seven years old and I saw her in her 1st Communion dress walking down the aisle to the altar .

When she got engaged, I was so excited and I could not wait to start planning the wedding I always envisioned for her.  I immediately started looking up venues, dresses, décor ideas, I sent her my Wedding Planning Guide and updated the guest list (yes, I created a guest list about 5 years ago).

Crazy right? I am not like this, after all, I’m a professional! But this is different, this is MY only daughter and I want it to be perfect! I was on the fast track to becoming “momzilla”. Thankfully, I quickly recognized it and took a step back.

I’m not going to lie, there are a few things that are important to me that I would love for her to incorporate, but I have to remind myself that my vision and plan for her wedding is MY plan and it may not be hers. She has her own style and vision and I need to do my best to listen to what she wants and see HER vision.

This is a different role for me, one that I am still adjusting to, so I need to try my best to follow my own advice.

IMG_4247

**********

This is a special time that my daughter and I will share only once in our life together, so I need to do my best to be “mom” first and “planner” second or even third. I need to take this journey with her and not for her. It will be hard for me, but I need to keep myself in check and I know if I go a little crazy, she will definitely let me know.

After all, the wedding last only a day but marriage is forever, so my role as her mom is to help prepare her for a long and happy marriage. I have so many different emotions every time I picture her walking down the aisle and becoming a wife, it is hard to put into words.

So, whose wedding is it anyway? It’s hers and I will do my best to help make it about her vision and not mine, but I can’t guarantee that I still won’t drive her a little crazy at times.

IMG_1255

**********

I hired a Coordinator to help with the wedding day because I know how important it is for me to be her mom and not her Coordinator. Shout out to Stacy @ Sylver Wedding & Events who I know is going to make sure everything is perfect so that I can enjoy this very special day just being mom…

I will share my journey as Mother of the Bride in future blogs, so be sure to follow along. It will be interesting to see how much of my own advice I follow.

He Asked, You Said Yes, Now What?

Congratulations…He asked, you said YES! Now what?

This is both an exciting and stressful time. So much to do, where do you start?

Welcome back! How exciting, the day you dreamed of is finally happening and everything you ever pictured is now filling your head. So many things to do, but where should you start? Well, once you have announced your engagement and decided on a wedding date, it’s time to start planning a wedding.

So, let’s get started….

**********

It costs what? Know your budget…

I know, it’s not fun, but It is important to know how much you can afford to spend so you don’t end up in the poor house. Talk about what you both want and how much you are willing to spend and can afford.

  • Decide on a realistic budget; then break it down by item. How much can you save and how much financial help can you expect from parents/family. Knowing your budget will help your decision-making as you start the planning process.
  • Make a list of your “must” haves. What are some things that are important to both of you that you want to include and where are some areas you are okay compromising in.
  • Decide on the style and feel you want for the day. You want your wedding to reflect who you are as a couple and your personalities, so decide what best describes you and go from there.
  • How much DIY to you want to do or do you want to purchase/rent everything; just remember to include those costs’ in your overall budget
  • Do you want to hire a stylist to help with the overall design of the wedding or is Pinterest your best friend?

Pinterest has a ton of ideas and if you do not already have an account, get one and create a wedding board, (caution: don’t go overboard, you still want it to reflect who you are). Share your board with your Planner so she/he knows your vision.

The Guest List, Who Should You Invite…

This goes hand in hand with the budget, the more people, the more money. This is a hard one and one that just about every couple struggles with. This is a very special day and you want to share it with everyone, but unless you have an un-limited budget, you may need to leave some people out. Here are some suggestions:

  • Make a list of family and friends you want to invite or are obligated to invite. Have your parents make a list. Combine the two lists and see where you are with the numbers.
  • Have your “must have” list and your B list. This way, when Save the Dates go out and you hear from those who can’t attend, you can go to your B list.
  • Kids or no kids? This is a sensitive topic depending on where you stand with kids attending adult events. Remember, this is YOUR wedding and if you want it to be an adult reception, then make that decision and stick to it. Most parents are happy to have an adult night out.
  • Do you have to invite all your co-workers and your 3rd cousin you only met twice? Unless you have a close relationship with your co-workers outside of work, I would say to keep them on the B list. If not inviting your 3rd cousin is going to cause family conflict, then talk to your family about it.
  • A rule of thumb I suggest is, if you have not seen or talked to someone in more than 3 years even if they are a relative, you should not feel obligated to invite them. Your wedding is not the day to catch up with them.

**********

Hire a Planner…

This is a busy time and there is so much to do and vendors to hire that it can become very overwhelming.

With so much information on the internet and on wedding websites, not to mention all your married friends offering to help you, it’s easy to think; “I can do this”.  Trust me, you NEED a planner or at the very least, a “Month of/Day of Coordinator”.

Think about it, this is one of the most important days of your life, one that you have probably dreamed of for a long time, so do you really want to trust just anyone to help you? I can’t tell you how many brides have said “I wish I hired you sooner” or “I wish I would have hired a planner”. Besides, you want your friends to be guests and enjoy this day with you,  not working.

  • A planner is going to make sure that the vendors you hire are professionals in their field.
  • They make sure your vision happens as well as handling all the details of the day.
  • They will work with you to create your customized timeline so that all the important events and announcements happen.
  • They will be there to help run the rehearsal and oversee as well as manage the set up on your wedding day.

wedding-planner

**********

Select your Venue…

Deciding on your venue will depend on a few things, so when touring venues, ask questions and then decide which best fits what you are looking for.

  • How much is the rental cost and what does that include? Do they work with specific vendors or can you bring in your own vendors?
  • Your guest count, can the venue accommodate the amount of guests and is there an extra cost per person if you go over the amount?
  • If you are having an outdoor wedding, does the venue have an indoor option in the event of rain or cold weather?
  • What is the style of your wedding? Does the venue reflect your vision and style?

            ———————————————————————————————————————–

Hiring the Right Vendors…

Two vendors I recommend you book right after your planner/coordinator would be your Photographer and DJ.

  • Your photographer is important for obvious reasons. Your wedding day pictures are going to last a life time and something you will share with your family for years to come. You want to make sure you work with a licensed professional that is just as invested in your day as you are.
  • Select the perfect photographer for you. Ask for referrals from your planner, we work with several photographers and know which ones do great work.
  • Follow a few photographers on FB and Instagram. You will start to get a feel for their personality and style.
  • Once you find a photographer who’s style you like, set up a meeting to see if you like them. Remember, you will be spending a lot of time with this person, so you want to be sure you are comfortable with them.

27021807_1795759170434955_4638951713630858595_o

Your DJ:

Let’s face it, your DJ can make or break your reception so why would you hire your friends’ cousin who does it on the side as a hobby. Now, no offence to your friend’s cousin, but do you want to trust this person to run your wedding day?

  • A professional DJ that is licensed has a lot invested in quality equipment and lighting, not to mention their reputation. They have a large music library and have experience as an MC so all the important announcements and events are not missed.
  • A professional DJ will work closely with your Planner in making sure the timeline is running smoothly and nothing is left out.
  • They keep the party going. If dancing at your reception is a BIG deal for to you, then you want a DJ who can read your guests to make sure that people are dancing and having a great time.

181861815

One final piece of advice, never let price be the only deciding factor when hiring vendors. Be sure to work with experienced professionals that are licensed and insured. Remember, you get what you pay for, so do your homework.

So now that you have some idea of where to start, what are you waiting for…

Welcome to my new Blog Post! Temecula Wedding Planner

Welcome to my new Blog Post

Hello and welcome to my first Blog! My name is Maria and I am the owner and lead planner at Events by Maria. I am a Temecula Wedding Planner and also serve the surrounding areas!

I love all things that celebrate love and romance so needless to say, weddings are my absolute favorite event to be a part of.

I have always been a bit of a romantic; movies, books, love stories, music, etc. I think you get the picture. So, it is only natural that I gravitated to planning weddings.

I like to plan and make sure things run smoothly so it is a natural fit for me.  I especially LOVE working with engaged couples, hearing their stories, and getting to know them.

I know the wedding planning process can be stressful and can sometimes  deter a couple from the real focus of starting your new journey together as Husband and Wife.

A Little Bit About My Own Love Story

As I mentioned before, I am a romantic at heart. I married my high school sweetheart and we have been married for 37 years! We are still very much in love!

I am the romantic in the relationship for sure! Don’t get me wrong, he can be too, but I am definitely the one who is always trying to surprise him with planning fun things for us to do together.

He is a good sport about it too! He goes along with most of my crazy ideas and will even sit through one of my “girly” movies, as he likes to call them.

Some Fun Facts about Me!

  • I love traveling and being outdoors!
  • We really enjoy spending time with our family and friends as often as we can!
  • I’m a huge photography hobbyist and carry my little camera around with me everywhere! Which often drives my family nuts!
  • In the summer, we love to go camping and BBQing!
  • We both love taking long rides along the coast of California on my husbands Harley Davidson motorcycle!
  • I’m also a pretty big baseball and football fan! We attend games whenever we get the chance! Go Dodgers and Raiders!

My first Temecula Wedding Planner tip to you!

It is so exciting when you get engaged!  I’m sure you’re so excited that you’ve already started to list all of the things you need to do! You also probably feel like you need to get them done NOW!

My first piece of advice to you as a Temecula wedding planner would be to slow down!  It’s okay! You do not have to book everything today. Take some time to enjoy this next step in your relationship and let it sink in.

Of course, you will eventually have to start the planning process, but depending on how soon you want to get married, you have a few weeks to just enjoy being engaged.
